What is glycolic acid? It is a fruit acid such as, from oranges or lemons as an example. Glycolic acid a water-soluble fruit acid that exfoliates the outermost dead layer of the skin, helping our skin to regenerate a newer, brighter improvement to our skin.
As your beauty advisor, we can tell you that, we have had the opportunity to teach the Japanese people about glycolic acids, when glycolic acid first came out. We co-authored the instructions on how to use glycolic acid for all different types of skin types.
We recommend stopping the use of Retin-A and using glycolic acid instead.
Glycolic acid is milder than a retinol, and it focuses more on dull or tired looking skin. The fruit acid in glycolic acid unclogs pores and exfoliates dead layers of the skin without the side effects of Retin-A which may include,
- Stinging of the skin.
- Severe chapping or peeling of the skin.
- Severe redness of the skin, which may be.
- Warm feeling skin.
- Avoiding direct sunlight.
- Change in texture of the skin leaving it mushy feeling.
While AHA is glycolic acid, the formula BHA is glycolic acid with salicylic (a derivative of aspirin, which must not be used by anyone who is pregnant). It is mostly used for clearing up acne.
When beginning to use glycolic acid it is better to begin with a lower dosage, leaving it on your skin for a shorter duration of time until your skin gets used to the product.
Although using a higher dose of glycolic acid for a peel effect is great, if it is done with a timer, so your skin will not burn from the higher volume of acid. Using a higher dose of glycolic acid also requires a neutralizer as we have shown you in our earlier post.

When you first begin using 10% glycolic acid you may feel a tingling, that is normal. If you have a burning sensation wash it off after 10 minutes your first use. The second day leave it on for an extra 10 minutes longer and then wash it off. Every day train your skin to get used to the glycolic acid until you can tolerate the using glycolic acid over night. After your skin has become accustom to the 10% glycolic acid, begin using it also in the morning. Build your skin routine to using glycolic acid twice a day, morning and night.
